OUR STORY
Chef Scott, also known as the Gringo Chef, lived in Guatemala as a young 21-year-old from 1994-1996 as a Christian missionary for his church. While serving the people of Guatemala, he fell in love with Guatemalan cuisine, most especially Guatemalan Colorado Tamales. After returning home from his mission, Scott would make the tamales at home, and most especially during the Christmas Holiday. As Scott got married and had children (Scott has 10 children), Guatemalan tamales became a Christmas tradition in the Wedge household and loved by his children. As the children become older, they would help with this tradition, and they would make memories together as family making Guatemalan Tamales.
A favorite story is when they lived in San Antonio, Texas one of Scott’s children was in middle school. He was very excited that his school would be eating tamales on a particular lunch day. When he was given a Mexican Tamale to eat, he was bewildered, looked around and asked everyone what tamale was this? He had never seen or eaten a Mexican Tamale before. It was at this moment that Chef Scott knew he had raised his children right!
Before 2020, Chef Scott and his family only made Guatemalan Colorado Tamales for family and for special occasions. Christmas 2020 was a tight and financially hard year and looked very bleak for Christmas presents for the family. With the suggestion from one of Chef Scott’s children, it was decided to make Guatemalan Tamales for everyone and to sell them to make Christmas money for the family. The Guatemalan Tamales were a HUGE success and Christmas 2020 was saved!
Every Christmas Season the Wedge family makes these special Guatemalan Colorado Tamales for each and everyone to share in the Guatemalan Christmas Tradition.
